What is
energy sharing?
You don’t have a solar installation and so green, affordable and local electricity is not accessible to you? With energy sharing, you can take advantage of the electricity produced by the solar panels that brupower installs in Brussels.
Just like with a home installation, you keep your traditional energy supplier (Engie, Total, etc.). Our co-owned panels produce electricity when the sun is shining: during these times, your consumption can be supplied by brupower's solar panels. The rest of the time, your traditional supplier will provide your electricity. Sibelga handles the distribution calculations, so you won't be charged twice for the same consumption!
What are
the benefits?
Brupower's price is more advantageous and stable than a traditional supplier, as it is independent of geopolitical events. You can save even more by consuming electricity during solar hours, for example by running your washing machine, dishwasher, or cooking in the oven in the middle of the day.
With brupower, you're also committing to a citizen-led, fair, and democratic energy transition! When you pay your bill, you're supporting a citizen movement, not a multinational corporation.

Who is energy
sharing for?
Brupower's energy sharing is open to all residents of Brussels. Becoming a member of brupower is accessible to everyone, with shares starting at €50. Depending on your means, we encourage you to contribute more to help the cooperative grow.

Any more questions?
Once activated, you will receive a bill from brupower every two months. Your traditional supplier will continue to charge you monthly installments. During the annual settlement bill, they will credit you if necessary.
If you participate in an energy sharing, you will therefore have two different bills.
- A bill for the consumption coming from the energy share.
This is the energy you will consume directly from the surplus of the local producer who is sharing his energy with you.
- A bill from your energy supplier.
This is the energy consumed that does not come from the local producer. You pay the market price, via your usual supplier.

To take part in electricity sharing, all participants must be equipped with smart meters installed for free of charge by Sibelga.
Sibelga also activates the communicating function of each of each participant in the electricity-sharing activity.
These meters measure the electricity shared and consumed by each participant every quarter of an hour. Sibelga collects this data and transmits it to brupower, who then invoices the shared electricity.
Anyone can ask Sibelga to install a smart meter, using an online form. Sibelga will install the smart meter, free of charge, within a maximum of 4 months of
submission of the request
No, all energy sharing happens within the existing network. All equipment you will need is the smart meter (see question above).
These are calculated based on average consumption profiles of Brussels' residents. These numbers can vary depending on:
- Your energy use: you can benefit more if you are able to adapt your consumption behaviour!
- Your current energy contract
- The number of energy sharing participants and availability of surplus energy
Once your smart meter has been installed, you can download the app MySibelga and follow your energy consumption daily. Keep in mind that these app has recently been developed and it's possible that there still are soome teething issues.
As a tenant, you have access to energy sharing as long as your existing electricity supply contract is in your name. There is no obligation to inform the landlord.

A favorable decision from the building manager (union) is required. The co-owners’ association (ACP) must then become a cooperative member of brupower as a legal entity. To participate in energy sharing, you must be a member of brupower, which is possible by purchasing shares.
By buying shares, you help boost photovoltaic installations in Brussels and become a co-owner of them.
It is possible to access energy sharing. In this case, you need to contact your landlord and provide them with information about energy sharing so they can understand its benefits and become a cooperative member themselves. Information is available on the website, and flyers or more detailed presentations can also be provided. Once the documentation has been sent, you can direct them to brupower at hello@brupower.be.
It’s important to distinguish whether the person wants to join as a producer or as a consumer.
- As a producer: If you own photovoltaic panels on your roof, you cannot participate in energy sharing with brupower. Brupower is a citizen energy community, not an energy supplier. According to the 2022 Brussels-Capital Region ordinance, the energy community must own the production installations. An exception exists for local energy communities, but since brupower operates at the regional level, it is more appropriate for it to function as a citizen energy community.
- As a consumer: The energy produced by brupower is available when its panels are generating electricity—generally at the same time as your own panels. Sharing would only be beneficial if your installation is undersized and does not cover all your consumption. If your installation is sufficient, it will not be advantageous, as you would still need to pay annual metering fees to Sibelga (in 2025: €0.035/day, or €12.77/year), which may exceed your financial gains.
No, you do not need to change your electricity supplier.
A smart meter is required to participate in energy sharing. First, check whether you already have a digital meter.
Installing a smart meter is free. You must request an appointment with Sibelga to replace your current meter.
Tip: indicate that the request is for participation in energy sharing—Sibelga offers priority appointments in that case.
Yes. Since meters are technically linked within the building, the syndic must request replacement for all meters at once (principle of indivisibility).
In a building, smart meters cannot be installed individually—if one owner wants one, all meters must be replaced.
The syndic must submit the request to Sibelga.
The electricity tariff offered by brupower can be indexed. This decision is made by cooperative members at the general assembly. Participants in energy sharing who are also cooperative members decide on indexation. For self-consumption, the price is always indexed.
The price is defined based on several criteria:
- Accessibility and inclusion: the price should be as low as possible so that as many Brussels residents as possible can benefit from local electricity.
- Fair compensation for employees: revenue helps repay the photovoltaic installations and pay the operational team fairly.
- Competitiveness: the price must remain competitive with standard electricity so users benefit economically, not just socially or environmentally.
- Transparency: a fixed price has been set for all members to simplify and clarify the offer. Previously, pricing varied by project, but this inequality has been removed by pooling gains across all projects.
